The Wash-Ashores by Hannah McKinnonMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a cute and summery read!
Holly heads to the Cape to do a trial run managing her grandmother’s Inn, the Cranberry. She has the summer to drum up business (and finances), or her aunt will sell to developers. The story is told from multiple POVs, including Holly, chef Greta, and elderly neighbor Ezra (my fav!). We also have Oliver, the gardener who has caught Greta’s eye, and Ben, a lawyer and Holly’s teenage love interest. Of course, Ben is back on the Cape this summer too, helping his brother start an oyster business. Still, even with a rekindled romance between Holly and Ben, most of the focus is on the Inn and its survival, especially the weekend wedding of a social media influencer who could make or break the Cranberry. Everything is light and superficial, and we have little chance to feel too deeply for most of the characters (though I felt a pull to kind, lonely Ezra pretty quickly).
This is a quick read that won’t leave a lasting impact, but if you enjoy sweet, seaside themed tales, you’ll enjoy it (and it will leave you hungry thanks to descriptions of all of Greta’s amazing dishes!).
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and Atria/Emily Bestler Books in return for an unbiased review.
